The Triumph motorcycles are manufactured by the same-name British company founded in 1983. It is a successor of the Triumph Engineering Co Ltd founded back in 1885. Today, street and sport bikes are offered by the maker. The assembly is carried out in Great Britain and Thailand.
Establishment of the brand
The history of the brand started in 1884 when S. Bettmann & Co. Import Export Agency was founded; it sold bicycles and sewing machines. In 1887, the partner of the company, engineer Mauritz Johann Schulte proposed to start their own production of vehicles. That idea was put into practice two years later when the company produced the first bicycles.
In 1898, they started to design motorcycles. The first model appeared four years later. Those Triumph motorcycles known as the First model were equipped with Minerva engines. In 1903, the company started to make in-house power units. The production of passenger cars began in 1923.
In 1955, a bike of the brand managed to reach 345.2 kph during the competition that took part on the dried up lake Bonneville. It was a world speed record. As a tribute to that victory, the legendary motorcycle Bonneville was created in 1959. Those vehicles were produced for some years also by the new company founded in 1983.
Before starting the production of other models, the company team visited Japanese factories for experience exchange. In 1990, in Cologne, new Triumph motorcycles were introduced to the public: Trident 900 and Trophy 900 with three-cylinder engines.

Advantages of the Triumph motorcycles
- Good manoeuvrability. For example, in the Street Triple RS bike it is achieved due to the Showa telescopic upside down fork and the Öhlins STX40 adjustable monoshock.
- Highly efficient braking mechanisms. In particular, the Speed Twin motorcycle is fitted with Brembo four-piston calipers which ensure a quick stop.
- Numerous operation modes of onboard systems. For instance, the operation of the main units of the Tiger 800 bike can be adjusted in accordance with particular traffic and weather conditions, or individual driving style.
Technical features
- In-line engines with 2–4 cylinders. They have four valves per cylinder and are mainly water-cooled. The displacement varies in the range from 0.6 to 1.3 l. The power output of some of the power units reaches 112 hp.
- Slipper clutch. Makes changing gears easier and faster.
- Colour TFT dashboard display with tilt adjustment. Arrangement of the data about operation of various systems on the display depends on the selected driving mode. For example, the tachometer and gear indicator or speedometer may occupy the major part of the screen.
- ABS and electronic stability programme. They constantly monitor the wheels rotation speed when braking and the position of the vehicle to ensure safe braking and manoeuvring.
