Exhaust system Motorcycle parts
Exhaust system for Top motorbike brands
Motorcycle exhaust systems are designed for cooling and driving away exhaust gases from the power unit. Apart from that, they dull the noise of the working engine.
Main components of a motorcycle exhaust system
- Lambda sensor. It measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases and transmits a corresponding signal to the engine control unit. The latter corrects the air-fuel ratio in the mixture if needed. The service life of the part is about 60,000 km and depends on the quality of the fuel used.
- Catalytic converter. It causes a chemical reaction that decreases the toxicity of the exhaust. This procedure requires a temperature above 250 °C. The component is installed after a lambda sensor. Its service life isn’t limited.
- Resonator. It makes exhaust gases less dense and reduces their pressure. This prevents the exhaust port of the power unit from getting blocked by exhaust backpressure. Manufacturers usually do not specify their service life.
- Silencer. It is at the end of the exhaust pipeline and is designed for reducing the noise. It is made of carbon or metals: steel, aluminium, titanium. These components of the motorcycle exhaust system can be of two types: sound-absorbing and resonator. The latter do not absorb the noise but disperse it. The component doesn’t have a defined service life.
- O-rings and gaskets. They seal all the connections in the assembly and prevent toxic substances from leaking out. They have to be replaced when it is necessary.
- Fasteners. They attach the parts securely and usually last long.
Malfunctions: their causes and symptoms
- Clogged silencer. When being used for a long time, the component becomes covered with soot deposits from the inside. Reduced engine power indicates that.
- Clogged catalytic converter. The reasons are incomplete combustion of fuel and oil getting inside the line. Both things happen due to engine malfunction. With a clogged catalytic converter, your engine will run rough.
- Mechanical damage. This results from an impact which leads to oxidation of metal elements. As a rule, the malfunction can be detected during an examination.
- Thermal damage. It happens because fuel and oil get into the exhaust system. When the engine is running, unusual sounds can be heard.
Tips on how to maintain and replace motorcycle exhaust system components
- Avoid exposing the components to moisture. The rapid temperature change caused by puddle water getting on the heated pipes leads to metal destruction.
- Protect the components from mechanical damage. Even small scratches might quickly lead to corrosion appearance and spreading.
- Maintain the engine. In particular, its excessive vibration loosens the fasteners of the assembly, and unburned fuel and oil particles clog the pipes.
