KTM motorcycle parts

The KTM motorcycles have been produced since 1953. Today, the production is carried out by the same name Austrian company which belongs to KTM Industries AG and Bajaj Auto. It was founded in 1992 but its predecessor started its activities as early as in 1934. The company became famous as a manufacturer of sport bikes. The factory is located in Austria.

Establishment of the brand

The history of the brand started in 1934 when a small fitter's and car repair shop was set up. Three years later, its founder began to sell DKW and Opel vehicles.

During World War II the company repaired diesel engines. Only after that, the owner started to design two-wheelers. The first motorcycle appeared in 1951. It was a light model, the R100, equipped with a compact engine with the displacement of 0.98 l. The components used in the production were, for the most part, made in-house. The exception was the Rotax engine made by the Fichtel & Sachs company.

Manufacturing of the first mass production KTM motorcycles started in 1953. A team of just 20 people carried out the work. However, they managed to make 3 units of motorcycles a day. By 1971, the number of employees had increased to 400.

The first success in competitions came in 1974: it was the Motocross World Championship. By the end of 2016, the number of the brand’s awards exceeded 250.

Advantages of the KTM motorcycles

• Excellent off-road properties. For instance, a heavy touring bike 1190 Adventure is characterised by a low level of vibration, its suspension effectively absorbs shocks when riding cross-country, and the Brembo braking system allows to stop very quickly.
• Eco-friendliness. The Freeride-E bikes are equipped with an electric liquid-cooled engine with the power output of up to 22 hp as well as with an easily detachable lithium-ion battery that can be charged from the mains in just 80 minutes.
• Power. In particular, the 450 SX-F KTM motorcycles of 2019 have a 63 hp engine, which is quite impressive taking into account its small displacement – only 0.45 l.

Technical features

• In-house engines with a SOHC cylinder head. They have four light titanium valves. Due to a small size, the engines have a positive effect on the steerability.
• WP DDC monoshocks with rocker arms. They are characterised by a long stroke, can well withstand significant impact loads.
• WP-USD AER 48 fork. The front shock absorbers perform different functions: the right one is responsible for damping, and the left one maintains the required pressure level.
