Engine motorcycle parts
Engine for Top motorbike brands
A motorcycle engine converts the energy of fuel combustion into a mechanical one. It is transmitted to the wheels and sets the bike in motion.
Main motorcycle engine components
- Cylinder(s). The air-fuel mixture is compressed and burnt inside it.
- Cylinder head. It protects parts of the valvetrain from dirt and shocks. Inlet and exhaust valves, as well as spark plugs, are installed in it.
- Valves. They ensure the supply of air-fuel mixture to the cylinder(s) as well as the discharge of exhaust gases. They are centred with the help of valve guides.
- Fuel pump. It is responsible for the continuous supply of fuel to a carburettor or injectors.
- Rotating assembly. Its main components are:
- Piston. Driven by the pressure formed by burning the fuel in an enclosed space, it moves inside the cylinder sleeve. From the piston, this movement is transferred to the connecting rod, and from there - to the crankshaft.
- Piston rings. They prevent exhaust gases from getting inside the crankcase and reduce the consumption of engine oil. As a rule, they are sold as a set.
- Crankshaft. The reciprocating motion of the pistons is transferred to it via the connecting rod. The crankshaft converts it into torque.
- Crankshaft bearing. It supports the shaft and ensures its rotation with as little friction as possible.
- Camshaft. It receives the torque from the crankshaft is responsible for opening and closing the valves in a specific sequence.
- Crankcase. Joins all engine components together into a single unit, takes part in its cooling.
- Crankcase breather filter. Prevents oil fumes from getting inside the combustion chamber.
- Fuel injector. It supplies a particular amount of fuel and atomizes it.
- Electronic devices. This category includes:
- Sensors. These devices measure various parameters that affect the performance of the power unit. For example, on the basis of the data received from the throttle position sensor (potentiometer), the engine control unit calculates the required amount of fuel. Apart from that, motorcycles also have lambda sensors, sensors that measure and detect oil pressure and temperature, coolant temperature, ignition pulse, intake-air flow and temperature, knock, camshaft position and some other.
- Engine control unit. Controls the performance of an engine due to the information supplied by the sensors.
- Gaskets, seals and O-rings. Ensure that the following elements are air-tight:
- fuel injector(s);
- oil filter;
- oil pan;
- oil filler neck;
- cylinder head and its cover;
- crankshafts, camshafts and other components.
Malfunctions: their causes and symptoms
- Mechanical damage. Faulty parts will produce extraneous sounds. Such malfunction may be caused by slipshod repairs, for instance.
- Oxidation. It is accompanied by motorcycle engine malfunctions. Parts might become oxidized due to moisture exposure after washing the vehicle or riding it through puddles.
- Thermal damage. In particular, gaskets and seals are subjected to it. In that case, it is difficult to start the vehicle. These malfunctions are usually caused by engine overheating due to high loads.
Tips on how to use and replace motorcycle engine components
- Any kind of malfunction should be eliminated as soon as possible. Riding a bike with a faulty engine might result in an accident.
- Most of the components do not have a specified service life. In order to extend it, it is necessary to control the lubricant level so as not to let the motorcycle engine overheat.
- The assembly must be serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you don’t have the required skills, it is better to have professionals repair and replace the parts
