Motorcycle brake systems are used to slow down and stop these vehicles. These devices are crucial for road safety.
Motorcycle brake system components
- Brake discs. As they stop rotating, the wheel isn’t rotating either thus making the bike slow down. Most often front brake components break down sooner than the rear ones. These spares are often sold together with brackets.
- Pads. They are pressed against the discs thus producing the friction required for braking. Front parts should be replaced after 15,000 – 20,000 km while rear ones might last for over 20,000 km.
- Front and rear cylinders. The former is actuated by pressing a lever on the handlebar and the latter – by pressing the pedal. These elements of the motorcycle brake system transform the force applied by the rider into the working fluid pressure. They do not feature any defined service life.
- Brake hoses.Working fluid flows in them. Rubber components, as a rule, last under 4 years. PTFE items with steel braiding can be used much longer.
- Callipers. They press the pads against the discs. These components are attached with brackets and move along guide pins. They do not have any limited service life.
- Devices for adjusting the dynamics of movement. For example, they include a wheel speed sensor. The data it sends is important for the proper functioning of ABS. A hydraulic unit also belongs to this category. It maintains the required pressure in the brake cylinders when ABS is on. These components do not have any definite replacement intervals.
Malfunctions: their causes and symptoms
- Thin or deformed discs. The symptoms of this malfunction are creaking sounds and reduced braking efficiency. These parts are usually damaged due to long-term use or as a result of overheating caused by high loads.
- Worn-out pads. They produce unusual sounds. Most often it happens when the pads were used for a long time.
- Scratches, corrosion damage and other defects of the cylinders. They reduce the efficiency of braking. Scratches might appear because of the dirt which got inside the assembly while servicing it. Corrosion damage is a result of the exposure to moisture. It often gets inside together with the working fluid.
Tips on how to maintain and replace components of a motorcycle brake system
- Install a new pair of pads each time you replace the discs. This way, you’ll be able to prevent braking efficiency from decreasing. It is cheaper to buy these spare parts as a kit.
- Faulty parts don’t always have to be replaced. For example, to restore a cylinder to a working condition, most often it is enough to use a suitable repair kit.
- After you have installed new parts, they have to be bedded in and most often the brake system has to be bled. You should also top up the working fluid if it is necessary.
