The Indian motorcycles were manufactured from 1901 to 1953 by the American Motorcycle Manufacturing Company which until 1928 was known as Hendee Manufacturing Company. They produced both sport and street models. The plant was in Springfield, Massachusetts, the USA. In 2011, the production of some of the bikes was resumed by the Polaris Industries company in the city of Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Establishment of the brand
The brand origins date back to 1897 when George M. Hendee, a businessman and former bicycle racer, established the production of the American Indian bicycles. The first motorcycles called Single appeared in 1901. They had a 1.75 hp engine, and the torque was transmitted with a chain drive. In 1903, engineer Carl Oscar Hedström set the world speed record by accelerating the motorcycle to the speed of 90 kph.
In 1905, the first bike equipped with a two-cylinder V-Twin engine with the displacement of 1 l was presented. Riding this vehicle, the factory team won several motorcycle races. Two years later, Indian street motorcycles with 0.6 l engines were built. Their bodies had a red colour, which became the brand’s hallmark.
In 1914, about 25,000 two-wheelers rolled off the assembly line and the company became the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. Besides, the maker’s team managed to set several speed records and win about 900 races.
The 1930s were marked by the implementation of a large number of unusual engineering solutions. In particular, exhaust pipes were now placed over the intake system and the instrument panel – atop the fuel tank.
After the company went bankrupt in 1953, several attempts were made to revive the brand. For example, the production of motorcycles was resumed in 1998, 2008 and 2011 by different companies. They manufactured several units of the Chief, Scout and Spirit. The Indian motorcycles that rolled off the Polaris Industries assembly line after 2011 brought the victories in a number of motorcycle races.
