The Piaggio motorcycles are manufactured by the Italian company Piaggio Group. It was founded in 1884. Today, it is owned by the Immsi S.p.A. Apart from motorcycles, the company produces scooters, mopeds, commercial vehicles. Its factories are located in Vietnam, India, China.
Establishment of the brand
The history of the brand started with a small family factory. It specialized in the production of marine equipment, and later – aircraft engineering. In 1924, they started to manufacture engines.
In 1946, the first Vespa two-wheeler appeared. It quickly became very popular, and on foreign markets as well. One of the reasons was a comfortable riding position. It was achieved due to the use of a compact enclosed-type engine. The gears could be shifted using the control located on the handlebars. In addition, the spare wheel was available. The model was fitted with a two-stroke engine with the displacement of 0.098 l and the output of 3.2 hp. Its maximum speed was 60 kph.
In 1967, the Ciao vehicle was made, which became the predecessor of the modern mopeds. The same year, the company purchased Gilera, one of the oldest European motorcycle manufacturers.
The Piaggio scooters called Sfera appeared in 1990. Their feature was a plastic body. In 1994, the company produced the maxi scooter Hexagon.
In 2006, the company introduced the MP3 three-wheeler. In 2009, the sports motorcycle RSV4 was produced under the brand Aprilia, and this vehicle brought a lot of victories to the sportsmen in the races. It had a four-cylinder V-engine with the one litre displacement. The MP3, the first hybrid scooter in the world, was made the same year. Its petrol engine was combined with an electric one.
The X10 Piaggio scooters have been available since 2012, with the engines having the displacement of 0.125, 0.35 and 0.5 l. At the same time, the Vespa vehicle got a new three-cylinder engine which is characterised by low fuel consumption.
